Going to a gig where Frank Skinner said “If you don't like my show is like bringing a vegan to a butcher “, got me thinking even more about what is going on with Plant-based and Vegan products and businesses.
Since when we started our small business, the first thing that we noticed was misinformation.
Most people do not know the difference between Vegan, Plant-based, and other diets.
Even big businesses like Morrison were labelling frozen fruit “vegan” pushing some of the vegan haters into further confusion.
This might sound an exaggeration, but the journey has been shocking. When we started our business, we attended a talk organized by The Guardian on “How to start your Vegan business,” many of the participants were not Vegan but the financial opportunity was great.
People were choosing to start businesses without looking into data and real facts. So, it comes again to mind Frank Skinner’s “Taking a Vegan to a…” That is how I felt when I went once to Greggs to get the extremely popular “Vegan sausage roll”, should a vegan go to such a business? Well, if you are a real Vegan and care for animals, the answer is no.
I try to buy my alternative burgers, etc, from Vegan or Plant-based companies. Once again “is like bringing a vegan to a butcher” when I go to the supermarket, but at least I know that the Plant-Based companies are cruelty-free.
I feel sad to see the plant-based areas in supermarkets reduced because not only the government and local governments have run a campaign of misinformation, but also private businesses.
One day entities were pro-vegan, pro-plant-based, pro-planet and then they changed their minds.
I am glad we chose to be Whole Foods Plant-based otherwise, our company could be in real problems. I am sad that many people are missing the real benefits of a good plant-based diet. I have said in the past that it is not for everyone as we all are genetically different but by doing some research you could find healthy alternatives that your body will be thankful for.
The environmental impact of a vegan/plant-based diet has been another total miss information trying to throw the blame for the overproduction of soya on the non-meat eaters when we all know that “In fact, almost 80% of the world's soybean crop is fed to livestock, especially for beef, chicken, egg and dairy production (milk, cheeses, butter, etc). Soy oil is used for cooking and can also be found in margarine, chocolate, ice cream or baked goods, as well as in cosmetics or soaps” (data by WWF)
Are customers exposed to misinformation and somehow this movement is winning? These winning groups are also pharmaceuticals and private medical providers…
Regardless of this, I am hopeful that the future will bring clarity via people like me using data and science to back up their lifestyles and stop the whisperers or pressure imposed by corrupt, unscrupulous private and governmental entities.
